Another title for
Strokestown
County football champions Strokestown put
another trophy on the sideboard on Saturday,
April 12, when they edged out Castlerea by 1-9
to 1-8 in the delayed 2002 All-County League
final.
In an excellent contest, Luke Dolan
scored what proved to be the winning point for
Strokestown. Castlerea would have salvaged a
draw had Ken Duggan not hit the upright with the
last kick of the game.
The sides were
level on 1-3 each at half-time, with Seamus
Heneghan (Castlerea) and Shane Flaherty
accounting for the goals. Points from Pat Lavin
(two), Barry O’Regan and Giles McDonagh
looked like giving Castlerea victory, but
Strokestown finished strongly with unanswered
scores from Shane Flaherty, Kevin Dolan and Luke
Dolan settling the outcome.
An added bonus
for Strokestown was that the win also earned
them two O’Rourke Cup points.
