Strokestown 1-11 Michael Glaveys
0-9
From Roscommon Champion:
Champions' experience
proves too much for spirited Glaveys
DEFENDING
champions Strokestown are back on the winning trail once again
when they had five points to spare against a very spirited
Michael Glaveys side in this entertaining first round J.F.
Hanley Roscommon S.F.C. game played at Hyde Park last Saturday
evening last. Justifying their pre-match tag as the odds-on
favourites, the champions were given a searching test by a
well-drilled Glaveys side but experience and physical strength
told in the end as Pat Doorey's men go marching
on.

first-round Strokestown 1-11 Michael Glaveys
0-9
Glaveys came to Hyde Park determined not to be
cannon fodder and they tore into this match with great
determination and no little skill. They were quick and skilful
and if they play like this in the losers group, they could
cause a few shocks along the way. Veteran James Heneghan
cracked over a great point in the second minute and it set the
tone for the game and three minutes later the very impressive
Martin McGuire popped over another excellent point from play
for the Ballinlough men. Strokestown did not panic though and
after Luke Dolan scored a 45-metre free in the sixth minute,
they went ahead in the 11th minute when Kevin J Dolan crashed
home the only goal of the game. Pierce McGinley lofted over
a high ball from the right wing which was missed by the
Glaveys full back line. It fell to Luke Dolan who almost broke
the crossbar with a fierce shot but the rebound was gathered
by Kevin J. who duly cracked the ball to the Glaveys'
net. The sides exchanged points in the next five minutes
when Luke Dolan and Stephen Ronane (both frees) were on target
again and the game warmed up into a very good contest between
two very committed teams. McGuire cracked over a great point
from play to leave only a point between the teams before Conor
Silke kicked two super points before half time to leave
Strokestown ahead by 1-4 to 0-4 at the break. Glaveys began
the second period the better side and Dermot Boylan (free) and
McGuire points left only one in it again after 7 minutes.
Points from Kevin J. Dolan and two frees from Luke Dolan saw
Strokestown extend their lead to four points by the 15th
minute but Glaveys refused the lie down. Sub Eugene Coggins
and Stephen Ronane (free) reduced the gap again before Silke
and Luke Dolan restored Strokestown's four point lead going
into the final ten minutes. Sean Gallagher reduced the margin
to a goal with three minutes to go with another excellent
Glaveys point but the champions put the issue beyond doubt
with points from Leo Shiel and Luke Dolan in the final few
minutes. Best for hard-working Strokestown were Kenny
Bosquette, Damien Donlon, Morgan Beirne, Ronan Owens and the
full forward line of Kevin J. Dolan, Luke Dolan and Conor
Silke who contributed all but one point of their side's total.
For an impressive Glaveys team Sean Gallagher, Paul Cummins,
Martin McGuire, Ian Daly and James Heneghan were
best.
